Established in 1898, the American Institute of Marine Underwriters (AIMU) has over 125 years of service as a trade association representing the United States ocean marine insurance industry as an advocate, educator and information resource. The member companies of AIMU handle the overwhelming majority of ocean marine insurance premium written in the U.S. market. AIMU’s corporate and associate member companies are the leading insurers, reinsurers, brokers, reinsurance intermediaries, maritime law firms, surveyors, and other service providers in the industry.

AIMU provides a robust program of services to its membership, most notably a comprehensive educational program that includes classes, webinars, field trips and seminars to foster the highest standards of knowledge and professionalism for marine insurance practitioners. AIMU publishes a Weekly Bulletin, providing its members with current information on maritime industry news, events, regulatory developments, key legislation and court decisions, as well as marine insurance statistics, research papers and alerts on important topics. An extensive library of ocean marine insurance forms and clauses is maintained.

AIMU has nearly a dozen technical committees who meet regularly to discuss current market affairs and periodically draft and release forms and clauses for voluntary use in the industry.

Through its extensive global network of surveyors (Correspondents), members have access to experts in the handling of survey inspections and claims with speed and efficiency anywhere in the world.

AIMU is an active member of the International Union of Marine Insurance (IUMI), a global professional body that represents the interests of national and international marine insurers and reinsurers.
