This is the seventeenth annual Marine Insurance Day Seminar, a collaborative effort of the American Institute of Marine Underwriters (AIMU), American Marine Insurance Forum (AMIF), Association of Average Adjusters of the U.S. and Canada, Inland Marine Underwriters Association (IMUA), and Marine and Insurance Claims Association (MICA). It is through our joint efforts that we can provide high quality educational seminar.

RO/RO VESSELS AND ELECTRIC VEHICLES – WHAT TO DO ABOUT FIRES?!
This session will discuss the recent casualties involving Ro/Ro vessels transporting electric vehicles with Lithium-Ion batteries. Grande Costa D’Avorio and Fremantle Highway are the most recent in series of major casualties over recent years. Battery fires are notoriously difficult to extinguish. Ro/Ro vessel designs present unique challenges. Firefighting, pollution, salvage, cargo loss, and reinsurance implications are just some of the topics for discussion by a panel.

SUBSEA EXPLORATION
In this session Victor Vescovo, a retired naval officer, sub-orbital spaceflight participant, and undersea explorer, will share his many firsthand experiences and insights into this emerging topic, including the recent Titan submersible implosion. Vescovo achieved the Explorers Grand Slam by reaching the North and South Poles and climbing the Seven Summits, and he then visited the deepest points of all of Earth's five oceans during the Five Deeps Expedition of 2018–2019.

THE METAVERSE – WHAT COULD POSSIBLY GO WRONG?
This session will offer an introduction to the metaverse, its related technologies and potential legal issues. The presenters, Wiggin and Dana partners Michael Menapace – Co-chair of the firm’s Insurance Practice Group, and Mike Kasdan – Co-chair of the firm’s Blockchain and Digital Assets Group, will address: what is the metaverse and virtual reality; web 2 v. web 3; your presence in the metaverse; what you do in the metaverse; why NFTs matter and smart contracts; licensing and property ownership issues; and possible areas of conflict.
